The Steuer-ID is personal and long-term
Germany assigns an 11-digit tax identification number to individuals. It is intended to identify you in tax administration and is different from a tax number used for a particular tax return or business matter.
Registration usually starts the process
After your registration office transmits the required data, the BZSt sends the number to your registered address. The linked BZSt page explains the official process and how to request the number again if necessary.

Treat the number as personal information. Share it only when a legitimate form or authority asks for it, and use official channels if you need a replacement.
If the letter is delayed or missing
Check that your address registration was completed and that your name is visible on the mailbox. The BZSt sends the first Steuer-ID separately by post; it does not arrive as part of the Anmeldung appointment.
If the letter is missing or the number has been lost, follow the BZSt’s official retrieval instructions. Keep the number private and share it only through legitimate employer, tax, or government processes. Avoid sending identity documents through social media or unofficial lookup services.
