EU students: enrolment, resources and health cover
EU citizens studying in another EU country must be enrolled in an approved educational establishment and have sufficient resources and comprehensive health insurance. After three months, the host country may require residence registration and evidence of these conditions.
Non-EU students: use the national student route
A non-EU student should use the EU Immigration Portal to identify the destination-country route, then confirm details with the national consulate or immigration authority. Check when to apply, what insurance is accepted and whether work is limited by the permit.
University registration and city registration are different
A university’s enrolment process does not normally complete a municipal address registration or immigration formalities. Ask the university’s international office for local links, then verify required appointments and documents with the relevant public authority.
Common questions
Does an EHIC always cover a full degree abroad?
Not necessarily. EHIC may be an option for eligible students in some situations, but insurers can limit duration or coverage. Confirm the full programme period with your insurer and host institution.
Can I work while studying?
Rules depend on citizenship and immigration status. EU citizens have different rights from non-EU students, whose permit may set conditions. Confirm with the destination authority before accepting work.
Does university enrolment register my address?
Usually these are separate processes. Check the municipality’s address-registration rules and any immigration registration required after arrival.
What if I am a doctoral researcher?
Some doctoral students may be treated as workers for health or social-security purposes. Ask the university and insurer to classify your situation before arrival.
