What the BSN is used for
The BSN is your personal number for dealings with Dutch authorities. It is used for tax, work, healthcare and DigiD applications.
Protect the number
Keep the number with your personal records and share it only when an authorised organisation needs it. A BSN does not itself grant a right to work or live in the Netherlands.
Common questions
Do I get a BSN automatically after moving?
When you register as a resident in the BRP and do not already have one, the municipality issues a BSN. Short-stay routes use RNI.
Can I get a BSN without living in the Netherlands?
In qualifying situations, people abroad or staying under four months can register at an RNI desk or through a government organisation.
Is a BSN the same as a residence permit?
No. It is an administrative identification number, not proof of immigration status or permission to work.
