Cars and motorcycles versus lorries and buses
For classes A1, A, B and B+E the DGT describes a direct exchange without tests. Classes C, D, C+E and D+E require a practical test and in some cases a theory test.
The fee is listed under tax types 2.3 (no extra tests) and 2.1 (tests required), but the page shows placeholder amounts, so check the current figure.
Cases where exchange is not possible
Your country is not on the convenio list; the licence was itself obtained by exchange from a non-convenio country; you obtained it while already a legal resident in Spain; or it is a Venezuelan permit in PDF format.
In those cases the DGT’s alternative is a new Spanish licence.
What this guide does not cover
EU licences follow EU rules, and the DGT pages we read cover non-EU licences. Check the DGT for an EU licence.
Appointment details, the issuing Jefatura and the NIE/TIE requirement were not specified on the pages we read, so confirm them when you book. For your residence card and NIE, see the NIE guides.
Common questions
How long can I drive in Spain on a non-EU licence?
The DGT says six months at most from when you acquire normal residence in Spain.
Can I exchange any country’s licence?
No. Only licences from countries with a convenio. Otherwise you need a new Spanish licence.
Do I need a medical certificate?
Yes. The DGT lists an informe de aptitud psicofísica from an authorised centre, valid for 90 days.
Do I have to take tests?
Not for classes A1, A, B and B+E. Classes C, D, C+E and D+E need a practical test and sometimes a theory test.
Can I exchange a licence I got after becoming a resident?
No. The DGT says exchange is not possible in that case.
