What the account includes

Cash deposits and withdrawals, payment transactions, transfers and payment-initiation services. Within the EU it also covers direct debits, debit or credit card payments and standing orders. Opening, using and closing the account are unlimited, as are deposits and withdrawals at branches or EU ATMs.

Fees in detail

Apart from the single monthly fee of no more than €3, the bank cannot charge commissions or extra costs for the included services. The Banco de España can update the figure every two years.

Beyond the 120 operations, the Banco de España publishes the average fees banks charged in the previous 12 months, which cap what a bank can charge.

What we could not confirm

The pages do not say whether an NIE or residence permit is needed, which documents to bring, how long a bank has to respond or when it can refuse. Do not rely on this guide for those points; ask the bank in writing.

For the NIE and the Padrón, which many banks and landlords ask about, see the NIE, NIE-before-apartment and Padrón guides.
